I Forgive You for Not Being the Person I Always Wanted You to Be
"I forgive you for not being the way I wanted you to be. I forgive you and I set you free."
Louise Hay, You Can Heal Your Life
There are many people in our lives that we need to forgive. The first one is us. No one has done a poorer job of loving and accepting us as we are than we have. As a result, we have cruelly criticized and victimized ourselves. We have spent a lifetime being ashamed of and angry with the person that we are-- simply because we could not be the person we wanted ourselves to be.
It's time to wake up to reality. The person we wanted us to be is fantasy. The person that we are is reality. Fantasy is about perfection. Reality is about imperfection. Reality is about an imperfect world populated by imperfect people. We are one of those imperfect people and it's time we accepted it. As soon as we can accept our limitations and imperfections, we can begin to accept the person that we really are. The person who is beautiful despite his or her flaws; the person who is talented despite his or her mistakes; the person who is love personified despite his or her neediness; and the person that God created and loves despite his or her being "perfectly imperfect."
So let's all set ourselves free to accept and love ourselves just the way we are by saying to ourselves: "I forgive you for not being the way I wanted you to be. I forgive you and I set you free."
Let's set ourselves free to be the person that we are, to be OK with ourselves as we are and to love ourselves as we are. Doing so will allow us to forgive others in our lives who haven't been the persons we wanted them to be either. It will help us to see them and accept them as they are-- not as we wanted; and it will help us to love them better despite their being less than what we wanted them to be.
